Your Generosity Helped Open A New Food Pantry

Thanks to your compassion and support,Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) was able to open a new food pantry — our Eagle Food Pantry — last summer. This critically needed resource will do wonders to reduce physical and spiritual hunger in McCreary County, Kentucky. In this region of Appalachia, far too many people are unsure of where their next meal will come from. That’s why we are so grateful for your support, which will serve as many families andseniors as possible as long as we can keep the shelves stocked. Since its doors opened, we have seen just how much demand there is for food assistance.

CAP anticipates nearly 800 families in the area may need the services the Eagle Food Pantry provides. That’s because McCreary County has one of the highest food insecurity rates in the state. According to a 2019 survey, the overall food insecurity rate for the county was 21.8 percent, while the rate for children was 27.9 percent, with approximately 91 percent of households and 95 percent of children in need of nutritious foods. For many families in McCreary County, there are no nearby grocery stores. And inadequate transportation can be a barrier to traveling to grocery stores in neighboring cities. This means residents must rely on prepackaged foods or fastfood meals.

Thankfully, your generosity makes nutritious pantry food boxes possible. Distributed to families in the region, they include rice, pasta, cereal, and a range of other healthy, nonperishable items. Your support also allows the pantry to provide recipe cards to families for the foods they receive. Plus, the Eagle Food Pantry staff also assists local schools through our weekend backpack program, much like CAP’s Grateful Bread Food Pantry does.

In addition, CAP is working with our Elderly Services Program to distribute commodity boxes to seniors in the community. Because of your generosity, the Eagle Food Pantry has already served more than 88 households, 220 individuals, and 42 seniors since its grand opening in June. Thank you for sharing your blessings to help us serve people who are hungry is in the area.
