With no car and three growing boys to feed, Serena pushed her brother’s wheelchair, the brother she had cared for until his recent passing, while her youngest son struggled to steer a stroller nearly as big as he up a steep, winding mountain road.  

They were headed to CAP’s Jackson County Food Pantry.  

Life on a limited income is a daily challenge for Serena and her boys. Resources, including transportation, in her rural community are scarce, and her children face hardships no child should endure.  

After she reaches the food bank, Serena tucks bags of food into every nook and cranny of her makeshift shopping cart. She hangs a carton of milk and a jug of juice off handles, draping snacks for the kids over the sides of the wheelchair and stroller. She knows it’s a long walk home, but Serena willingly makes the journey so she can feed her family. 

Because CAP is more than just a pantry, our team arranged to deliver food to Serena and her family, sparing her the long, arduous, and dangerous walk.
