It's here!!!!!
It's that time of year again. The time when hundreds of college students from all over make a trip to Kentucky and serve the people of Appalachia. Yes, it's WorkFest time! Today begins the first week of WorkFest for both the Sandy Valley and Cumberland Valley, or as most long term volunteers like to call it, the east side and the west side. The Cumberland Valley will host WorkFest at Camp AJ (one of CAP's summer camps) and the Sandy Valley will host it at Camp Caleb. For the last few weeks now, the Housing program and the Volunteer Program has been preparing for this event. It's a time of running around, organized chaos and lots of fun. Of course there are still lots of last minute details being put together as I write this blog, but for the most part we are ready for the college students to arrive. For me personally WorkFest holds a very special place in my heart, as this is where I first discovered CAP. I honestly can't believe it has been four years ago already. WorkFest truly changed my life and I thank God every day for the people I have met and gotten to become good friends with through WorkFest. One of the main reasons I'm pretty excited for Week 1 of WorkFest is because the University of Connecticut will be attending. Although, I don't believe I know anyone coming down with the school, it will be nice to have some fellow Huskies together and maybe get a few UCONN cheers in as well.
So one of the many tasks that were accomplished to get ready for WorkFest was splitting some firewood for the campfires up at Camp Caleb. I would just like to point out that the girls of Housing did all the splitting of wood. Bethanie, one of my housemates, loves to split wood, so there are various pictures of her splitting it by hand. Then as our truck was almost full, our housing manager, Bryan, showed up with an automatic log splitter. Let me tell you this is a very nice tool for those hard to split pieces of wood. Bethanie was a little hesistant at first to use it, but as the pictures show, she quickly changed her mind.
Also in other news, if you have read my previous blog post about building a goat shed for Harold's goats that were about to give birth, well there are finally two new Kids!
Kate Stefanowicz is a long-term volunteer in CAP's Housing program. She normally lives at Floyd Volunteer House, but for the next three weeks will be living at Camp Caleb for WorkFest.
