Hunger Awareness

CAP's Grateful Bread Food Pantry hosted its second annual Hunger Awareness March on September 11th in downtown Mt. Vernon, KY. A record number of 213 caring individuals stood up to hunger by participating, and 595 pounds of food was donated to the pantry.
The 2-mile walk was a demonstration of people from around Kentucky coming together for a common goal… to increase awareness about hunger locally and worldwide. Among the people who took part were, Michael Bryant, mayor of Mt. Vernon and his staff, Rockcastle Regional Hospital employees and Rockcastle County Middle School students and teachers. In support of Hunger Awareness, seventy-five orange balloons were released during the march.

“The Hunger Awareness March gives us the opportunity to focus on the problem of hunger within our community, and to take action in making the event an effort to end hunger,” said Carolyn Lindsey, Grateful Bread’s program manager. “In Rockcastle alone, our (CAP’s) pantry served on average 1,888 Rockcastle County residents during the first seven months of this year (2013). That averages out to be 35% of those living in poverty in our community. Food insecurity is one of the reasons Grateful Bread Food Pantry exists.”
