Cryptocurrency makes change possible at nonprofit serving Appalachia

APPALACHIA – (December 9, 2021) Supporters of Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) now have a new way to help meet needs in Appalachia: cryptocurrency. As donors consider end-of-year charitable giving, CAP staff have worked to make donating to CAP easy and help donors save on their taxes.

“The IRS classifies cryptocurrency as property for tax purposes which means it is typically the most tax efficient way to support nonprofits like Christian Appalachian Project,” said Katie Atkinson, CAP’s Digital Marketing Manager. “We are excited to partner with the Giving Block to expand our online giving. These donations will help CAP continue to deliver nutritious food, clothing, home repair, elderly services, and other essentials.”

The Giving Block will allow CAP to easily accept cryptocurrency donations, and help current crypto donors find Christian Appalachian Project. When donating crypto, donors receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the crypto and can avoid the capital gains tax they would have incurred if they had sold the crypto and then made a donation. That means supporters are able to donate more, as well as deduct more on their tax returns.

These increased donations can make a tangible difference to families in Appalachia who have lived in a region of intense and growing poverty for far too long. Christian Appalachian Project has programs that address isolation, lack of educational opportunities, and the destructive effects of daily hunger which hold hardworking families down.

“Children, their families, and seniors suffer in very difficult circumstances,” Atkinson added. “CAP works diligently to stay up to date with technology and digital trends because we want to provide as many tools in the giving toolbox as we can to people who want to help make a difference. Donors, especially at this time of year, can help provide tangible solutions to Appalachian families suffering in need. Crypto currency can be a useful tool that expands the impact donors have while saving on their taxes at the same time. It’s a win-win.”
