More than fifty CAP disaster relief volunteers worked tirelessly last week to remove debris and water caused by the devastating floods that struck Louisville and Eastern Kentucky. And thanks to the generosity of CAP donors like you, more than $4,000 was raised online to support the efforts and help us purchase much-needed equipment.
The flash floods and high winds that struck Central and Eastern Kentucky in early August submerged streets and vehicles and left tens of thousands without power. Over 6 inches of rain fell in less than three hours in Louisville, Ky, flooding homes and virtually shutting down the city.Click here to read more about the flooding
Volunteers Reach Louisville
Our disaster relief crews arrived in Louisville on August 10th after receiving request for assistance from local authorities. And according to Sherry Buresh, Assistant Director of CAP's Disaster Relief Program, over twenty homes were assisted by CAP volunteers in the form of debris and flood water removal and/or sanitation. In some homes, flood waters filled basements and nearly topped kitchen cabinets!
Progress was slowed due to the incredible amount of debris that needed to be removed from homes by the trailers and transported to the community landfill. Our teams made more than twenty trips to remove flood ruined carpet, furniture and other materials from homes.
Donations Partially Matched By Foundation
Over $4,000 was donated online to support our response to the flooding in Louisville. And thanks to a partial match through a foundation grant, those donations will have an even greater impact.
The generosity of our donors allowed the disaster relief team to acquire equipment such as a water pump to remove flooding from homes, personal protective equipment like masks and gloves to protect volunteers, and fuel for our trucks to haul away debris. Sanitation supplies and clean drinking water was delivered by our Operation Sharing Program.
