ENDICOTT, Ky. — Christian Appalachian Project’s (CAP) Camp Shawnee will not be offering programming at the camp facility this summer due to safety concerns caused by a mudslide on the camp road.   

“Camp Shawnee has been a staple in this community for many years providing programming for our youth in the region,” said Owen Wright, CAP’s director of human service programs in Johnson, Floyd, and Martin Counties. “We obviously prioritize safety, but CAP will also continue to meet the needs of our young people as we have done for years past.”

CAP has partnered with local elementary schools to offer activities during the day for our younger campers. Dates and locations for CAP’s Day Camps will be publicized at a later date. Parents and guardians will still be able to sign their children up to attend Camp Shawnee, however there will not be residential overnight camp for elementary students this summer.

Camp Shawnee staff and volunteers will provide two weeks of overnight camp for teens. Teen Week will be held at CAP’s Foley Mission Center in Floyd County. There will be a week for teen girls and a corresponding week for teen boys.

“We understand that this will be an adjustment for parents and grandparents looking to offer summer programming for their children while school is out,” Wright added. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to address the issue. CAP anticipates that the safety issue on the road leading to camp will be resolved in a timely manner.”

CAP staff and volunteers will continue to work at Camp Shawnee and Foley to provide engaging programming for youth in Eastern Kentucky.
