At the end of a long day spent pouring love into the lives of children at Camp Shawnee, Danielle Rose sits on a couch strumming softly on her guitar. “CAP has always been special to me, but that sense of home felt even stronger this year,” she reflects.

Danielle, a counselor at Camp Shawnee since 2015, is committed to making a difference in the lives of children in need. “I am constantly amazed by the dedication of volunteers and staff, both new and returning, and the meaningful relationships that we build both with each other and with the campers. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever experienced,” Danielle explains.

Volunteer counselors make a lasting impact in the campers’ lives

Last summer, 544 campers spent a week at Camp Shawnee’s overnight camp. Volunteer counselors came from across the nation to serve during the six weeks of camp season.

Pat Griffith, manager at Camp Shawnee, says, “Danielle puts her heart and soul in everything she does at camp. She’s there for all the right reasons and she’s truly a godsend. The children absolutely adore her. When she’s at camp, things are always better.”
Danielle is quick to explain that volunteering has a lasting impact on the volunteer, too. “You see yourself differently and see others differently in the best ways possible,” Danielle says. “Being able to see our campers simply have fun and enjoy being a kid in a such a safe, loving environment is one of the greatest blessings.”

Enrichment, fun, and a week away from worry

During camp, children participate in activities that build character, self-esteem, and instill positive life values. They enjoy a worry-free week of swimming, hiking, canoeing, fishing, arts and crafts, campfires, praise and worship, field games, a talent show, and much more.

In many ways, camp serves as an extension of CAP’s year-round educational and leadership programming. For one week each summer, children are guaranteed three meals a day, a safe, encouraging environment, and the chance to just be a kid.
