Birthday and Beyond

By Kate Stefanowicz

This week started off pretty amazing for me. You may ask why? Well because Monday was my birthday and those are always pretty fun for me. I work in the home repair program at CAP so we still had to work but it was a very low key day that included coffee and donuts and an early end to the work day. Afterwards one of my housemates made chili and cornbread for dinner which was amazing and we had cake and ice cream for dessert to top off the evening. After Monday I didn't really think this week could get any better, but it did! Tuesday included a long day of work, but our participant made us some homemade peach cobbler and it was hot out of the oven. This week we sided a whole side of the house which doesn't seem like it would take that long, but this side of the house had two windows, a gable and electrical box that we had to work around, which requires some time and makes the process take a little longer, but after it was all finished it looked great.

The house we are currently working on needed a lot of work and we are getting to the point where everything is coming together and it looks like a brand new house. Next week we have an experienced group coming so we should get a good amount of work done. It's always amazing to see how much work gets done in a day with a group and it's also great to meet new people from all over and from different walks of life.

As for the rest of this weekend, I believe it will be pretty relaxing. My house (Floyd house) will probably hang out with another one of the volunteer houses (Johnson house). This is always fun considering during the work week we don't really get to see each other too often since we are all in different programs. So hopefully no snow this weekend either, since that is in the forecast and its way too early for that!

Kate is a long-term volunteer in CAP's Housing program. She lives in Floyd Volunteer House.
