AmeriCorps Volunteer Nina Isaacs Receives Governor’s Service Award in National Service
FRANKFORT, KY (APRIL 23, 2026) – Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) is proud to announce that Nina Isaacs has been selected to receive a Governor’s Service Award in National Service. A longtime advocate for hunger relief, Isaacs serves at the Christian Appalachian Project Jackson County Food Pantry, where her steady presence and deep commitment have shaped support for thousands of families. The award, presented by the Office of the Governor and Serve Kentucky, recognizes Kentuckians whose service strengthens communities across the Commonwealth.
“Ms. Nina exemplifies a life of service,” said Libby Wasserbeck, who manages the pantry and nominated Isaacs for the award. “She is a trusted and beloved presence in this community, known for her compassion and her willingness to go the extra mile to make sure neighbors have enough to eat.”
For much of her life, Isaacs has quietly lived out a calling to serve her neighbors. From feeding generations of students through Jackson County Public Schools to decades of service at CAP’s Camp AJ and, most recently, as the first AmeriCorps Volunteer at the CAP Jackson County Food Pantry. Isaacs has made dignity and care central to her work. In a county where more than 20 percent of residents experience food insecurity and grocery access is limited, her presence ensures families receive both nutritious food and encouragement.
“People often feel shame at needing a food pantry, but Ms. Nina welcomes them and encourages them in a way that puts them at ease,” Wasserbeck said. “When Ms. Nina knocks on your door, she brings hope as well as food for your table.”
Isaacs often extends her workday to deliver food to people she knows cannot get to the pantry for food, like one grandmother caring for her grandson, who would otherwise go hungry by the end of the month.
“I believe in treating everybody good because the Bible teaches us to love everybody because He first loved us,” Isaacs said. “I hope when people come to the pantry, they know I love them.”
The Governor’s Service Awards program was established in 1975 to highlight the power of volunteer and national service in Kentucky. Administered by Serve Kentucky in partnership with the Office of the Governor, the awards honor individuals and organizations who strengthen communities through selfless service, including AmeriCorps Volunteers serving across the Commonwealth.
