Christian Appalachian Project is thrilled to welcome back AmeriCorps members. For the 2012-13 year, CAP will have at least 33 long-term CAP Volunteers serving as AmeriCorps members and four summer camp AmeriCorps members.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to address the most critical problems in our nation’s communities.  As a Catholic Volunteer Network member program, Christian Appalachian Project partners with AmeriCorps to develop new projects, offer services in new areas, and offer supplemental services which would not be provided without the service of AmeriCorps members. Upon the completion of their service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award of up to $5,550 to pay back qualified student loans or to finance college, graduate school, or vocational training. AmeriCorps members are eligible for deferment of qualified student loans during their service term. AmeriCorps also pays the interest accrued on qualified student loans during the service term.

We have enrolled 25 AmeriCorps members already, but we are still seeking several more AmeriCorps members for our January long-term volunteer orientation class:

AmeriCorps Home Repair Crew Leader (skilled): We are seeking a long-term volunteer skilled in construction who can lead a crew of other long-term volunteers and volunteer groups. The crew leader would serve in CAP’s Elderly Services program, providing home repairs for homebound senior citizens. Projects include porches, wheelchair ramps, and other small home repairs.

AmeriCorps Home Repair Crew Members: Volunteers assist the employee crew leader in home repairs and new construction.  Must be able to climb roofs and serve outside in all seasons. Although no previous construction experience is necessary, long-term volunteers will be expected to act as assistant crew leaders for groups of 3-10 people throughout the year. Volunteers needed for our Housing and Elderly Services programs.

AmeriCorps Elderly Services Caseworker: CAP’s Elderly Services program provides services such as home visitation, transportation, social activities, prescription assistance, and various other services, which ease the effects of isolation and allow homebound seniors citizens to remain in their homes longer. Must be 21 or older with a good driving record.

Prospective AmeriCorps members with CAP complete the same application as all potential CAP Volunteers. To be considered for one of the positions above, apply by December 7.
