CAP’s Disaster Relief Program in Action

Be Prepared

National Preparedness MonthWe never know when or where a disaster may happen.  Being prepared at all times is one way of protecting yourself and your family.  CAP has joined the National Preparedness Coalition as a means of helping to spread the word of the importance of making certain you put together a disaster plan or review it if you already have one.  Prepare an emergency kit or check the expiration dates and/or restock the one you have.  There are many sites to assist you with ideas of things to include in your kit and plans.  The important thing is that you do it and not put it off until it’s too late.

Below are a few examples of items to include in your Emergency Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for flashlight
  • First Aid Kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes
  • Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone and chargers
  • Prescription medications and glasses
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change

 

About Disaster Relief

Disaster Pic 1Weather is unpredictable and, as a result, storms can paralyze a geographic region in a matter of minutes. CAP’s Disaster Relief program organizes volunteers to respond to the needs of those impacted by a natural disaster.  Responses may include everything from home and property clean-up, to providing and distributing emergency disaster supplies.

The Disaster Relief program works to network resources with other community agencies to best meet the needs of those affected. Oftentimes, communities come to CAP for help but program director Robyn Renner is always alert to weather conditions when she suspects CAP can be of assistance. Once involved in a relief effort, CAP coordinates efforts with state VOADs (Voluntary Organization Active In Disasters), Emergency Management, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and/or other local disaster coordinators. The objective is always to get help to those who need it as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

History

Disaster Pic 2In 2004, CAP employees began discussing ways to help people who had been affected by a natural disaster. In May of that year, eastern Kentucky received devastating flash flooding which soon became a Federally Declared Disaster. Even before the program was formed and people trained, CAP was first on the ground to help and lead the way in assisting the various counties’ disaster survivors. Working with FEMA, Kentucky VOAD, National VOAD and their member organizations, was all new to CAP but they quickly received the proper training to take lead in forming the areas’ long-term recovery committee.  CAP’s Disaster Relief Program continued stepping up to help with more and more disasters working disasters from New York to Florida, including the Gulf Coast during Hurricane Katrina.

Anyone is welcome to volunteer for the Disaster Relief Program. There is no need to be a current CAP volunteer or have had previous volunteering experience. If time is not available, donations are always gladly received.
