CAP’s Grateful Bread Food Pantry currently serves over 2,400 people each month (currently 58% of those in poverty in Rockcastle County). Over 25% of the general population and 32% of the children in Rockcastle County are living in poverty. Parents are trying to find ways to feed their children. Many of our families have never needed assistance but as jobs decline and cost continue to rise, more and more families are looking for help.
We provide food to families that are not only filling but healthy and with choices to meet their dietary needs and wants. A family of four generally walks out with over 100lbs. of food including fresh fruits and vegetables such as corn on the cob, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, cantaloupes, and other seasonal items as well as canned fruits and vegetables, juices, protein items, pastas and grains, etc. We receive food for the pantry from many sources such as God’s Food Pantry, USDA, Panera Bread, Kroger, Big Lots, private groups and individuals. We offer the services in the pantry in an environment of dignity and respect. By offering the services in the manner we do, people maintain their self-respect and feel a sense of responsibility to others in the community. This is shown through the many program participants that volunteer their time to help ensure that others get the food they need in the same caring environment that they received theirs.
