Summer Camp |

Every year, CAP offers two summer camp programs, Camp Andrew Jackson and Camp Shawnee. They provide a rewarding week of learning and fun to more than 1,000 Appalachian children. With a charge of only $10 per child, the camps serve those who could otherwise not be able to afford the opportunity to attend a summer camp, and many children look forward to it as their only vacation during the year. Camp Andrew Jackson is nestled in rural Jackson County, Kentucky, and serves all of the surrounding counties. The full-service facility has a small lake and is surrounded by a beautiful forest. Camp Shawnee may be the longest, continuous running camp in Eastern Kentucky. It is a wilderness retreat located on the banks of Dewey Lake in Floyd County, Kentucky, and serves 15 surrounding counties and the state of West Virginia. Summer Camp activities include canoeing, fishing, arts and crafts, swimming, hiking, camping, praise and worship, camping and field games. While all the activities are fun for the children, they also provide the opportunity to learn important life skills such as leadership, safety, team building, self-esteem and respect for others. Summer Camp 2009 This summer, camp dates for both Camp Andrew Jackson and Camp Shawnee are June 22-July 31. Orientation for camp volunteers and staff begins June 15th. Attendance at orientation is strongly encouraged.
Benefits & Requirements of Summer Camp Volunteering
CAP's summer camps would not be possible without the service of the nearly 60 volunteers who come each summer. Counselors, lifeguards and medical personnel (nurses, EMTs) are needed to make camp a success. All camp volunteers receive room and board and transportation upon arrival. Airport pickup is available at Lexington for Camp Andrew Jackson and at Huntington, West Virginia, for Camp Shawnee. You may also bring a car to camp. Travel costs are the responsibility of the volunteer. To be considered as a camp volunteer, applicants must meet the following requirements:
