CAP Volunteer E-News - June 2007

Women in poverty

Women in poverty in Appalachia face significant challenges, including unemployment, drug abuse, domestic violence and cancer. According to the Intercultural Cancer Council, the cervical cancer rate among white Appalachian Kentucky women is almost twice as high as the incidence rate reported for other white women. To address some of the unique needs of women in Appalachian Kentucky, CAP operates two domestic abuse shelters, engages in court advocacy for domestic violence victims and runs a residential facility for women struggling with substance abuse.

"Distressed" Applachian counties are indicated in red. Distressed counties are defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission and rank in the worst ten percent in the nation's counties based on unemployment, per capita income and poverty rate.

Outreach Services holds annual Women's Retreat
“I loved the spirit of God on this mountain.”
--Women's Retreat participant

This May CAP's Cumberland Valley Outreach Services program hosted its 4th annual Women’s Retreat at Camp Andrew Jackson. The retreat continues to grow and it sees many women faithfully return year after year. During the three-day retreat women have Bible study, get glamour shots (pictured), attend a health fair, play bingo, do crafts, and have free time to sing, hike, canoe and just sit and share with each other. One Outreach volunteer commented, “The Women’s Retreat is by far my favorite part of being an Outreach volunteer. It is amazing to see how the women are transformed during the weekend."

The women ranged in age from eighteen to seventy-plus and came from five counties. Many were referred by other CAP programs or by family and friends.

Ichthus partnership a success!
More than 70 volunteers and employees, including 25 summer camp counselors, spread CAP's message about volunteering to an audience of 18,000 people at the annual Ichthus Christian music festival in Wilmore, Kentucky. The theme for this year's festival, which attracts youth groups from around the country, was "Uprising," a concept that provided CAP the perfect opportunity to reach youth wanting to live a radical Christian life by serving families living in poverty. Prior to the festival CAP hosted five youth groups from Kentucky, Tennessee and Kansas who wanted to make service a part of their Ichthus experience.

In addition to staffing several volunteer informational displays around the festival grounds, CAP volunteers and employees also provided support for the festival organizers by helping set up the main stage, working security and providing a shower trailer from CAP's Disaster Relief program. When volunteers weren't working, they had a chance to enjoy artists such as Relient K, Newsboys and Switchfoot.

Volunteer Spotlight

"I felt a calling to a year of service after I graduated from college and explored many programs, but CAP seemed to have the program (Outreach) that I felt God was pulling me toward, as well as a deep spiritual component that I knew I needed."

-Elizabeth Berling, Outreach Services

Liz at a glance...

Hometown: Ft. Wright, Kentucky
Alma Mater: Loyola University of Chicago
Major: Psychology
Service placement: Outreach Services
Volunteer Community: Jackson Volunteer House

Liz Berling first heard about CAP from a chaplain at Loyola and after visiting for a personal interview, she knew that it was the place she wanted to spend the next year. “I liked that CAP is an interdenominational organization with people from many backgrounds," Liz notes. "I also appreciated CAP’s focus on faith, which was evident in its community living and its dedication to service.” Liz’s interest in social work attracted her to the Outreach Services Program, and she has served in Jackson County for the past year.

This fall Liz will start a Masters of Social Work program at the University of Denver. She says that “this year with CAP has prepared me for the future because I gained practical experience to complement the book knowledge gained in college. I learned so many people skills; how to converse with people and how to appreciate a different culture.” Liz also experienced a lot of growth through community living, saying that the experience of living in a volunteer house “taught me to be more patient and to love people for who they are.”
