CAP Volunteer E-News - June 2007

Aging in Appalachia

For most people, getting older means not getting around as well as before or perhaps cutting back to live comfortably on a fixed income. For senior citizens living in the poorest regions of Appalachia, aging also means confronting isolation from family and needed services, the rising cost of prescription medication and food insecurity.

As one of CAP's primary service populations, the elderly in eastern Kentucky are served by a variety of CAP programs, including Housing, Outreach Services, Disability Services and most directly though Elderly Services. Volunteers in the Elderly Services program decrease isolation among homebound elderly by visiting seniors and also providing transportation to medical appointments. Elderly Services volunteers serve as liaisons between participants and CAP's Prescription Assistance program, which works with physicians and pharmaceutical companies to obtain participants' medication at no or a greatly reduced cost. Elderly Services volunteers also plan Thanksgiving and Easter dinners where participants from different counties come together to enjoy food and fellowship.

Commodities program provides food security

Each month, CAP's Outreach Services program partners with God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington, Kentucky, to facilitate the Commodity Supplemental Food Program in several eastern Kentucky counties. The program provides nutritious USDA commodities to seniors age 60 and over who meet the program's income guidelines. Outreach volunteers organize other CAP volunteers and employees, along with volunteers from the community, to unload the truck and pack and carry the boxes. Elderly Services volunteers also chip in by delivering the commodities to homebound participants.

Volunteer Program welcomes new recruiter

In June, the CAP Volunteer Program welcomed Amblyn Allen (pictured helping out at Rockcastle County's commodities distribution) as its newest employee. As a Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator, Amblyn will travel to colleges and churches around the country promoting CAP's various volunteer opportunities. Amblyn served CAP for two years as a volunteer in CAP's Outreach Services program before joining the Volunteer Program as an employee. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Amblyn first came to CAP through Notre Dame as a WorkFest volunteer.

"I wanted to be a volunteer recruiter because I believe in CAP’s mission and know how important volunteers are to CAP’s work," Amblyn said. "My experience here has been very important to me and I hope that by sharing that with potential volunteers I can help draw more people to CAP."

Amblyn is happy to answer any questions you might have about volunteering at allen@chrisapp.org.
