Facts about Appalachia
As in many impoverished areas, children bear the brunt of poverty in Appalachia. County rates of poverty among children under the age of 18 range from 17% to 52%. CAP serves children in need through Child and Family Development, Summer Camp, Parents Are Teachers and Educational and Recreational Programming.
"Distressed" Applachian counties are indicated in red. Distressed counties are defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission and rank in the worst ten percent in the nation's counties based on unemployment, per capita income and poverty rate.
Summer Camp Deadline Extended
"Summer Camp is amazing. The other counselors, staff, but especially the kids taught me amazing lessons. I found myself missing everything moments after I arrived home! I cannot wait to return!"--Bridget, CAP camp volunteer.
Thankfully, Bridget is returning to volunteer at one of CAP's camps this summer. Her energy and love for children will once again give some great children and youth from eastern Kentucky a summer they'll never forget.
We are praying you will apply to join Bridget for 3-9 weeks this summer. Just a few weeks of your time can make a lifetime of difference to the children you will serve.
The Volunteer Program has extended the deadline for submitting summer camp applications to May 15. Camp dates are May 29-July 27 and counselors, lifeguards and arts and crafts instructors are still needed.
If you or someone you know is interested in working with the most energetic members of the Appalachian community this summer, submit or request your application today!
Volunteers Organize Teen Retreat
In April, volunteers from Jackson and Rockcastle volunteer houses teamed up to host a teen retreat at Camp Andrew Jackson. Twenty-three teens from Jackson, Owsley and Rockcastle counties gathered at Camp AJ for a weekend of team-building, games, outdoor activities and devotional time in a positive environment. The retreat was spearheaded by the initiative of volunteers Lindsey Gasperic and Liz Berling, who recruited volunteers from other programs to spend their weekend in service to the teens.
Changes in Volunteer Program
In March, Kim Otto, manager of Volunteer Recruitment, Admissions and Placement, announced her engagement and pending move to Virginia. Unfortunately, the happy news also meant that Kim was resigning her position in the Volunteer Program.
Though we are sad to see Kim leave, the Volunteer Program is happy to welcome Kathleen Leavell to the Volunteer Program as Kim's replacement. Kathleen is a former volunteer and long-time CAP employee. Congratulations and good luck to Kim and Kathleen!
Volunteer Spotlight
Kristine at a glance...
Hometown: Detroit Lakes, Minnesota
Alma Mater: St. Cloud State University
Major: Biology
Service placement: Volunteer Program
Volunteer Community: Johnson Volunteer House
CAP is an organization not afraid to adapt to the area's changing needs, and three-year volunteer Kristine Seabloom has always been ready to adapt right along with CAP.
When Kristine joined CAP in August 2004, she served in the Housing Program repairing homes in Martin County and also visited homebound seniors as an Elderly Services caseworker. When Hurricane Katrina struck and CAP volunteers responded in Mississippi, Kristine felt called to continue serving with CAP's fledgling Disaster Relief Program even after CAP's volunteer and employee presence in Mississippi had ended. Kristine provided direct response and administrative help for Disaster Relief until she moved to the Johnson Volunteer House and CAP's Summer Food Service Program in Magoffin County. She currently splits her time between the Volunteer and Community Development programs.
Whether she is gutting a house or helping to coordinate one of the many mission teams who volunteer at CAP, Kristine has always been willing to respond to CAP's needs with her generous service. When her volunteer time is complete, Kristine plans on continuing to help others as a counselor.
