Educational and Recreational Programming

Special programming on leadership development is provided throughout the year for youth. Through activities and weeklong camps, teens gain an increased awareness of their unique skills, learn effective methods of communication and develop teamwork and collaboration skills.

In cooperation with the camp manager and teacher, volunteers assist in the development and implementation of presentations of the educational curriculum for all the summer camps and special camps. Volunteers then implement those presentations in schools during the school year to meet both CAP and Kentucky Education Reform Act goals for second through twelfth grade students. The contacts made are also used to promote CAP’s summer camp program. Volunteers may work for three months as a summer camp counselor. They should enjoy working with children in a school setting and at summer camp.

Each year, hundreds of eager school age children participate in the ‘hands on’ approach to learning built into the activities at Camp Andrew Jackson. Camp staff provides a variety of educational programs in which children learn about geography, diversity, science, problem solving and communication.

For six weeks each summer, the yells and laughter of children echo around the hills and lake at Camp Andrew Jackson as they swim, canoe, hike, make crafts, play and participate in Bible school. For the many summer CAP volunteers who work as counselors, one of the highlights of the week is the awards ceremony each Friday. With everyone gathered together, each child receives a certificate recognizing something special about themselves. Whether it’s an award for ‘best smile’ or ‘bravest’ for overcoming their fear of water, it’s a time for recognizing and celebrating each individual child.
