School Readiness

Back to school means another year of learning, reading, writing and arithmetic, but it also means back-to-school expenses. Clothing and school supplies lay an extra burden on Appalachian families who are already struggling with daily expenses.

CAP’s School Readiness program assists low-income families by providing new clothing, shoes, notebooks, socks, calculators, backpacks and assorted other necessities they might not otherwise be able to afford. Children from various counties receive back-to-school basics, allowing them to return to classes with added enthusiasm and encouragement.

“(CAP’s School Readiness program) helps out a lot,” said a parent. “With the baby and having to spend so much on milk and diapers, the program helps out so much. We’re like most parents; we’d rather give it to our kids and do without.”
