Hands-On Change. For Good.

Operation Sharing

As a CAP program, Operation Sharing brings businesses and people together to deliver hope to individuals and families in dire need. Operation Sharing solicits and accepts donations for the program’s participants. Donations include items from food and books to furniture and building supplies. Each year an estimated more than 1.6 million people in all 13 Appalachian states are impacted by donated materials (valued at more than $55 million).

All this is made feasible by non-profit partnerships with more than 1,300 churches and community-based programs throughout the region. In 2006, the most recent collaboration was made with Mission West Virginia, an outreach created by the executive branch of the West Virginia state government. They will provide warehouse space and put Operation Sharing in contact with its large group network and will help write grants.

It is exciting how much the program has grown since its inception. And with that steady growth, the ultimate goal of making materials available to those who need them has never wavered. To maintain its outreach, Operation Sharing is in constant need of corporate donors due to the growing number of recipient agencies the program serves, at approximately 50 per year.

To be a part of CAP’s ministry of “delivering hope,” let us know of a potential donor or to learn more about the program, please contact Jeff Burchett, Operation Sharing Director at 606-523-5799, jburchett@chrisapp.org or P.O. Box 1390, Corbin, KY 40701.

History
In 1986, then VP of development for CAP, Bill Begley received a phone call from an associate at the National Federation of Non-profits. They were asking if CAP would be interested in receiving a donation of children’s books. After traveling to Virginia to see the books, Bill realized he could not turn this offer down. Presenting the situation to the board of directors, they accepted the offer and spent the money necessary to house the books and the employ workers needed to distribute them.

Corporate Donations
Each year, in-kind donations are received from approximately 125 corporations from across the country and are accepted at the Corbin or Hagerhill warehouse. CAP’s Human Service programs use some of the goods, saving much-needed dollars that can be better utilized to provide help for program participants. Additionally, CAP has partners with more than 1,800 churches, schools and community service organizations to redistribute these resources to those in need in out-of-state areas.

Operation Relief
As part of expanding services to deliver hope, Operation Sharing delivers much needed emergency relief supplies to CAP’s Disaster Relief program via Operation Relief. The program serves communities within the service area that have been devastated by natural disasters.
