CAP Employees Participate In Missions Throughout The World
While Christian Appalachian Project serves the area of eastern Kentucky and surrounding Appalachian states, some employees throughout our organization have participated in far reaching missions that are scattered in remote corners of the world, with much more dramatic degrees of poverty, devastation and need.
Still recovering from jet lag on her recent trip into Managua, Nicaragua, Liz Fritz, Volunteer Recruiter, shared her experience with fellow employees during chapel, “My team and I went with tons of medical supplies, vacation bible school materials, puppets, props, servant-like attitudes and willing hearts. I came back home with a deeper faith and a sincere change of heart. The realization that no matter where you live or what you have, all people need is Jesus Christ. (Phil. 4:11-13) I was blessed beyond words and I want to thank all who prayed for me. God honored and answered faithfully!
In May, Robyn Renner, Outreach and Barbara Gilbert, Mail Room, journeyed to Chinameca in San Megil, El Salvador, as part of a team with Disaster Relief and the Baptist Association. The area had suffered major devastation due to major earthquakes and aftershocks, sustaining massive losses of homes, resources and half million fatalities.
Robyn Renner commented on her trip with this summary, “It has given me a whole new outlook in life when it comes to being grateful for what we have. We take for granted our resources and material things that are available. I am so thankful for my new family, that I simply fell in love with and will be my family always. It makes it all the better knowing that they serve the same God as I do, across the world. I hope to return again next year.”
Barbara Gilbert had this reflection about her time in El Salvador:
“God allowing me to go on a mission trip to El Salvador. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Words and pictures cannot tell the story of all I saw, heard, and felt. I went wanting to be a small blessing in some way, but I was the one who was blessed a hundred times over! The people were so loving and kind. Most of them were living in such deplorable conditions. These made me ashamed of all the blessings I take for granted each day. Getting out of my comfort zone was more than worth it.”
Ben Prewitt, Planned Giving went on several missions into Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, setting up water and purfication systems; in Mexico City, after a devasting earthquake; then within the US for a prison ministry, coordinated with FCA.
“You become aware of how abundantly blessed we are. Seeing people who literally have nothing; people walking fifteen miles to work; six people living in one room. The slap of reality is that you go there to help, and you’re the one that is transformed.” continued Ben Prewitt.
Not available for quotes or comment, due to another service mission, Paul Southgate, Information Systems, completed a trip to the Dominician Republic over this summer, where he worked in construction, alongside fellow church members from Wilmore, Kentucky.
Each mission trip our fellow co-workers experienced, contained varying elements of service, either in construction or teaching or simply sharing Christ with others. The common thread woven throughout every memory shared was the overwhelming feeling of being blessed. Blessed by the experience. Blessed realizing our abundance of prosperity. Blessed in the priviledge to see Christ’s love through another culture, another country and another corner of God’s earth. AMEN!
