Family Life Counseling

CAP believes that family is the natural and basic unit of society as ordained by God. Families are to be a safe, secure and peaceful environment where people can grow and develop without exposure to violence, abuse or fear. Through family life education, enrichment and counseling, CAP’s counseling programs can make life better for children as well as adults, and strengthen the family as a unit.

This spiritually-based counseling program assists individuals in getting to the root of the problem, then helps them develop strategies to overcome it and move toward the life they seek. Counseling can be provided on an individual, couple, family or group basis. Counselors and staff provide services throughout eastern Kentucky and all counselors are certified and adhere to professional standards in their work.

Spouse Abuse Shelters

CAP has been committed to helping families resolve varying degrees of crisis and domestic violence for more than 25 years. Currently, CAP operates two shelters that serve several Kentucky counties. With a staff of employees and CAP volunteers, they provided safe shelter to hundreds of women and children (and some men) in crisis due to domestic violence each year.

While at the CAP shelters, staff assists the victims of domestic violence in obtaining housing, serves as an advocate for victims in the court system and helps them obtain any other resources they might require. Participants are also able to access counseling though CAP’s Family Life Counseling program.

CAP staff also educates the public about the issue of domestic violence through community presentations and events.

Substance Abuse Recovery

In 2002, Appalachian Kentucky, which is home of 20% of Kentucky’s population, reported 50% of the state’s drug-related deaths. Prescription pain killers and methamphetamines are the primary drugs of choice for eastern Kentuckians suffering from addiction. Though a state crackdown on internet pharmacies and meth production has alleviated the problem somewhat, substance abuse continues to affect the physical and economic well-being of Appalachian people.

CAP responded to the growing substance abuse epidemic by launching the Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery Center for women in September 2005. Healing Rain is a twelve-bed faith-based residential facility for women seeking to overcome the addictions that keep themselves and their families trapped in a cycle of poverty. The six-month program provides a therapeutic community for women to learn life skills, begin their journey in the 12-step program, set and achieve goals and realize their worth.
