For Shawn we had a tremendous out pouring of support. Many of you were willing to take this young man into your lives and your homes. His story of nearly making it, on his own only to be thrust back into the clutches of poverty and despair was truly a heart wrenching ordeal for all who were watching. We are so pleased now to ease your worries about Shawn. Today he is settling comfortably into life as a college student at Union College in Southeast, Kentucky. We have delivered many boxes of school supplies, clothes and other necessities to Shawn. He is taking classes and training for his return to football. His first season on the field will not begin until 2010 because of eligibility, but Shawn is optimistic about his new academic and athletic opportunities.

Between your gifts and his support network at Union College Shawn is doing well. All made possible through your kindness and caring. Shawn has been very blessed by your outpouring of love and support. Thank you, again for helping us re-open the door to Shawn’s future.

We do serve many other children and young adults like Shawn in our programs and services. We have a program geared toward encouraging success beyond high school. Through an enrichment program called CAP Kids that begins in elementary school and supports children through high school, we show kids the many possibilities and opportunities all around them, available for anyone with the desire to “go for it;” colleges, universities, manufacturing facilities and large corporations, culture experiences like plays and concerts, even zoos. This type of eye-opening journey can be the thing that inspires a child to succeed, to reach for what once was never even considered an option. For the many children that don’t have a talent for football, CAP Kids can provide a view of the potential beyond their front doors, and hope after high school. For Jeremy, CAP was able to host a baby shower on Sunday, March 22. With your kind donations we were able to get two large items; a high chair and an infant car seat, leaving only a double stroller yet to be bought. CAP was also able to provide many small items such as bottles, diapers, lotions, pacifiers, clothing and other necessities. One of the most special gifts from CAP was a laundry basket lined with a beautiful and very colorful Mountain Baby Blanket , and filled with all of the items we were able to purchase with your donations that had been sent from across the country specifically for the couple’s new baby. Jeremy and his wife also received several other gifts from the friends and family present. The baby is expected to arrive very soon, her due date is April 12th.

Mountain Baby Blanket ,
Many thanks to Rachel Cox who started the Mountain Baby Blanket project. We have received over 200 quilts and receiving blankets to distribute to young mothers and children in our programs. It is truly inspiring to watch as each box filled with beautiful blankets arrives.

Through Child and Family Development Centers ,CAP helps many young mothers and families. Beyond providing basic necessities, we offer a safe, fun and educational environment for many children in need. This is the place where we begin with many of our families, through the children we can discover a host of hidden problems. For example, we may notice a child who wears the same clothes, or one who is always hungry. These are common signs of larger needs in the home. So we ask for a home visit, then we can access how to properly support the family, thus giving the child a better chance for success.

cooper homeFor Courtney and her family we received an anonymous gift intended to purchase a used car that will allow her mother Angel to put her GED to good use by accepting a new job; no more walking 8 miles to town, either. Also we delivered the many clothes, personal hygiene items, school supplies and toys to her whole family that were so kindly delivered to our door from many of you. Two of her sisters were able to attend a school dance with simple, nice, new dresses, which would have never been possible if not for your donations. We are focused on continuing to provide assistance to Courtney and her sisters.
