For Shawn, the 18-year old football start from Flat Gap, Ky, a second chance at a better life has been offered, thanks to the overwhelming support from viewers across the country. “A lot of people are trying to help me right now, and I really appreciate everything everyone is trying to do for me,” he said. “I want to tell everyone who has helped me and responded to this thank you, and I hope they can help anyone else that is in my position.”
Following the show, Shawn received scholarship offers from three local universities, and has decided to attend Union College, a well-respected institute of higher learning. Shawn has also received several employment offers since the show’s airing. Some as far away as New York!
The other children featured, 12-year old Courtney and 11-year old Erica have also received offers of support from viewers. Donations of clothing, food and educational assistance have flooded in.
The Christian Appalachian Project is collecting contributions from donors for all the children featured in ‘A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains.’ A special fund has been set up for Shawn, which will allow him pursue his education without the financial burden of living expenses.
